Playing an orchestral instrument by themselves only gives music students a part of the joy that can be had from music - playing in an orchestra fills in the missing experience. The wider repertoire, extra practice, and performing in formal concerts complement individual lessons and solo playing.
The Sinfonietta, our training orchestra for younger players, has been closed to membership since COVID, but will restart when sufficient players have expressed an interest. It is relatively open with minimal requirements. This offers younger music students the chance to develop their talents quicker and have fun with other young musicians.

If you are looking to get involved in the Aotea Youth Symphony, here are some key facts you need to know:
- The Symphony orchestra accepts musicians who play at Grade 5 level and above, aged between 13 and 20.
- The Sinfonietta orchestra accepts musicians who play at Grade 3 level and above, aged between 9 and 13.
- We accept applications all year round.
- We practise on Tuesday evenings at Selwyn Village Theatre, Point Chevalier, Auckland.
- As of March 2023, the Symphony is particularly interested in players of oboe, clarinet, bassoon, brass, viola, low strings and percussion.
- There is an annual membership fee for both the Symphony and the Sinfonietta. Special rates are available for families with more than one child in the AYS.
