GERMANY TOUR In April 2008, the Aotea Youth Symphony toured to Germany, hosted by orchestras in Stuttgart, Freudenstardt, Bonn and Frankfurt. What the orchestra lacked in number was more than compensated for by musicality, balance and energy. The innovative programme featuring a repertoire of mainly NZ and British origin contained the surprise emergence of a choir from out of the ranks of the orchestra. This was led by promising mezzosoprano Jenna Johnson-Aufai. Jenna received many accolades, as did the choir and orchestra. The items of Maori origin were especially enthusiastically received. The programme was developed and led by Music Director Paul Harrop, and the choir led by Choir Director Cathie Harrop. Outstanding solo items were performed by Finn Schofield and David McGregor (clarinetists) and Kareena D’Souza (violinist). In Bonn, the orchestra was received by civic leaders, and after a short performance, presented a letter from the Mayor of Auckland. This was followed by a tour of the historic Klais organ factory and a short concert in appreciation of the hospitality of the staff and friends. School concerts provided the most satisfying experience for the youthful musicians, particularly when it became apparent that many of the audience had never previously experienced orchestral instruments, or even live music before. Combined concerts with host orchestras in Freudenstardt and Bonn provided musical and social experience, especially the combined Music Directors conducting duet! Tours such as Germany 2008 provide musicians with unparalleled experience – musically, educationally and socially. The orchestra gratefully acknowledges the support of sponsors, host families in Germany, Singapore Airlines, Pat Goddard tour director and family and friends of the orchestra. Photos will follow! |
